Ski Blade/Skiboard Faq
Ski Blade (Snowblade) and Skiboard Questions Answered.
What are ski blades?
Ski blades are basically about half the
length of traditional snow skis and are usually wider. Most
ski blades come equipped with non-releasable bindings.
Higher end ski blades come with releasable bindings which
increase the safety of ski blading. |
| What are skiboards? What's the
difference? Skiboards differ from ski blades
and snowblades in that:
A.) Skiboards are symmetrical which means they have equal
tip and tails. Ski blades and snowblades do not have equal
tips and tails (asymmetrical).
B.) Most skiboards have a 4 hole screw pattern. This is
important when it comes to the flex of the skiboard.
C.) Most skiboards have non-releasable bindings. Due to
the length of skiboards, the potential for injury is much
less, therefore a releasable binding is not mandatory. This
is not a hard-fast rule, some skiboarders prefer a
releasable binding.
D.) Skiboards are wider than ski blades and snowblades.
Skiboards perform very well in terrain parks and the half
pipe because of the width. They are much more stable when
landing.
|
What sizes are ski blades and skiboards?
Most ski blades range from 75cm's to
around 120cm's. Anything longer than 120cm's aren't really
ski blades. Junior skiblades can run anywhere from 60cm to
75cm's.
|
What type of boots are used with ski
blades?
You can use any downhill ski boots with
ski blade bindings. Most ski blade bindings fit up to a size
13. If you wear over a size 13, you should check with the
shop your purchasing the ski blades from if the binding will
fit your size. You can also use some mountaineering boots
that have the toe and heel grooved for crampons.
|
What type of bindings are used with ski
blades and skiboards?
Most ski blades are sold with pre
installed non release bindings. Non release means just that,
they do not disengage when you take a spill or put excess
force on the tip or tail of the ski. Ski blades don't use
releasable bindings because the possibility for injury is
much less due to the shorter length of the ski. Many riders
still prefer to use a releasable binding, in which case you
might have to have your local ski shop mount them to your
ski blades because the pre drilled holes may not line up.
Line ski blades have a freedom plate which allows you to
swap their binding with your ski blades or any other skis.
Ski blade bindings are generally
constructed of aluminum and steel or plastic and steel. The
aluminum and steel bindings are a much higher quality and
more reliable than the plastic bindings.
|
What are the benefits to ski boarding?
Well there are many. To many to list
actually. Ok, maybe just a few. For one, ski blades are much
easier to learn than regular now skis and snowboards. You
can be up and running your first day and actually having
fun, not falling on your back side. Two, ski blades are half
the cost of traditional snow skis. You can pick up a good
quality pair of ski blades for around $200. Three, you can
advance to the expert level in a season and having more fun
on the mountain than you ever thought possible.
|
What size ski blades/skiboards are right
for me?
Well, that depends on your height and
weight. Sizing ski blades is much easier than traditional
ski's. Most ski blades are good for people over 5'. For
people and children under 5', you should stay under 80cm's
length. Some manufacturers have specific ski blades for
children which are around 60-70cm's. For the expert rider it
just depends on what type of riding you prefer (terrain
park, half pipe, glades etc.)
|
Are ski blades allowed at all ski
resorts?
Yeah, pretty much. We can't say 100%, but
we have never heard of any resort not allowing ski blades on
the mountain.
|
| Are skiblades/skiboards built the same
as regular skis? The basic
construction of ski blades and skiboards are the same as
traditional snow skis. All skis and ski blades have a core
which can be wood, polyurethane, plastic or similar type
material. They also have a top sheet and base which are
basically the same as skis.
|
| Are ski blades and skiboards "all
mountain" skis? Most ski blades
are all mountain skis. They can be taken all over the
mountain whether you prefer long groomed trails or black
diamond moguls. Narrower ski blades are not really good for
the terrain park or half pipe. The narrower waist makes them
unstable when landing jumps. If you want to hit the park and
pipe, get yourself some skiboards.
|
| Are ski blades and skiboards safer than traditional
skis? Yes, they are safer because of the shorter
length. This is why most ski blades and skiboards have
non-releasable bindings. Adding releasable bindings to ski
blades or skiboards increases safety even more. |
| Are there alternative uses for ski blades and
skiboards? Ski blades and skiboards can be used in
many different ways. Many riders use them in the
backcountry. Because they are much smaller in length than
traditional skis and lighter, they can easily be carried in
a backpack along with your ski boots to your favorite remote
trail. You can hike a mountain trail and skiboard down!
Ski blades and skiboards can also be used like cross
country skis. You can purchase skins that will attach to the
bottom of the ski which will enable you to climb hills.
There are many ways to use ski blades and skiboards. Just
use your imaginaton!
